In 2024, Microsoft announced that the Windows 10 operating system will no longer be supported as of October 14th, 2025.
An operating system (OS) communicates with hardware and software on a computer system. Microsoft released the Windows 10 OS in July of 2025 and will no longer release updates and patches for it past the October 14th, 2025 end-of-life deadline; this includes security updates for vulnerabilities. Furthermore, devices that operate on Windows 10 past October 14th will not be compliant with cyber insurance policies.
The next operating system is Windows 11, which was released in October of 2021 and will be supported through the remainder of the decade.
To be prepared, determine your computers’ operating systems, and purchase dates. Computers purchased in the last 3 years typically will be able to update to Windows 11 without an issue; computers purchased before that timeframe are exponentially more likely not to update properly. In the latter cases, the upgrade is not worth time and cost; instead, we recommend planning to replace the computers purchased prior to 2022.
In the final month leading up to Windows 10’s end-of-life, check your computer’s operating system; if you find yourself still on Windows 10, please reach out to our team at Plummer Slade. We will work with you to devise a plan to either upgrade your systems to Windows 11 or to replace your computer entirely to ensure that you function to the best of your ability.
