For the second year in a row, Slipper Rock University student, Erica Bauer, has been awarded the Martin H. Plummer Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded each year to a junior or senior studying Computer Science, Information Systems or Information Technology with financial need and a minimum of a 3.0 G.P.A. The chosen student is awarded $1,000 toward tuition and another $250 as discretionary funds.
Erica is a junior at Slippery Rock University studying Information Technology. She is from St Marys, Pennsylvania and has had an interest in computers since childhood. With a 3.78 grade point average, Erica is a recipient of the Merit Scholarship and on the Dean’s List. Erica would like to serve as an example against the male dominated stereotype of the antisocial computer geek. Along with her academic success, Erica is also involved with campus organizations such as Rock Catholic and the University Program Board.
Slippery Rock University’s Martin H. Plummer Scholarship was established in memory of SRU alum Marty Plummer. While attending Slippery Rock University as a student of the Computer Science Department, he was awarded several scholarships and was very appreciative of the aid he received. Martin had always planned to give back to help others in this same way. As an alum, he was one of the founders of the Board of Visitors, an advisory board to the Computer Science Department. After Martin passed away in 2004, his wife, Alicia Slade, took his place on the board. In his memory, Slade established the Martin H. Plummer Scholarship for Slippery Rock University in 2010.
“[Marty] worked several jobs to pay for his rent, food, books, etc. One Scholarship had discretionary money for the book store along with funding towards tuition,” said Alicia Slade, President of Plummer Slade, Inc. “He would tell me how important that was to him and how he was able to go to the book store and purchase a SRU back pack and feel like the other students. Marty would say that when he was able, he wanted to setup a scholarship and to make sure that it had some discretionary funds for the recipient.”
